
Ásbrú Quality of Life
Keilir, Háskólavellir, Kadeco and Reykjanesbær stand by the development of a knowledge based community at Ásbrú and presently there are about 1.800 residents in 700 apartments on campus.
Keilir handles the renting of apartments at campus and the first apartments were rented out in August 2007. The rates are very reasonable and all Icelandic university students have access to them, as long as they fulfil certain requirements regarding the performance of their studies. Included in the rent is heating, electricity, internet connection and free bus fares, with internet connection, between Ásborg and Universities in the Reykjavik area. Payments to the housing fund are not included in the rent.
Ásbrú offers a fun and diverse environment which suits both individuals and families. There are excellent facilities and areas for out-doors activities at Ásbrú and the residents of Ásbrú have access to playgrounds for children and open barbeque facilities.
There is an elementary school at Ásbrú, Háaleitisskóli, which has children in classes 1.-5. The oldest class will continue at Háaleitisskóli next winter, so the school will have. classes 1.-6. for the 2009-2010 school year.
There are also two pre-schools at Ásbrú. One is the health pre-school Háaleiti and the other is the hjalli pre-school Völlur.
The youth centre of Reykjanesbær for kids aged 13-16, Fjörheimar, is located at Ásbrú. Fjörheimar is the centre of youth activities in cooperation with all middle schools in Reykjanesbær. It is housed in a 1.400 m2 facility on one floor. It should be noted that bus fares are free for all in Reykjanesbær and at Ásbrú, and all children in elementary- and middle school can go to the swimming pools free of charge.
Ásbrú also has Langbest, a family friendly restaurant and cafe. A sport centre and gym opened in December 2007 and it is open for the residents of Ásbrú for a modest fee. The hair saloon Fimir opened in March 2009 in the same building as Langbest and Samkaup supermarket.
Listatorgið(Art Square), where culture- and hobby groups in Reykjanesbær have their facilities, is located at Ásbrú, next to the service centre at Keilisbraut 773.
The legendary Officer’s Club at Ásbrú was recently opened and events and balls are held there approximately 1-2 times a month.
The double-lane Reykjanesbraut makes all transport and communication to the Reykjavík area easier and safer, and it is only about 20 minutes drive from Ásbrú to Hafnarfjördur.
